[Concern] Interpretation of the changes in the new mobile power standard ANSI/CAN/UL 2056:2024!

On October 22, 2024, the United States (ANSI) and Canada (SCC) released the safety standard ANSI/CAN/UL 2056:2024 for mobile power banks. Compared with the 2020 version of the outline "Outline of Investigation for Safety of Lithium-ion Power Banks", the new version of the standard ANSI/CAN/UL 2056 "Standard for Safety Power Banks" has been changed in terms of scope of application, test requirements and methods.

Scope of application of the standard

Changed applicable objects: from mobile power banks that are only applicable to lithium-ion battery types to mobile power banks that are applicable to all battery types.

Increased voltage range: The maximum rated voltage of input and output is increased from 20Vdc to 60Vdc, and the watt-hour rating of the mobile power bank is required to be no more than 100Wh.

Newly added: Applicable to products that use integrated photovoltaic cells as power sources, but products within the scope of the portable power supply standard UL 2743 are not within the scope of this standard.

Standard test requirements

New test items:

★ Electrical test: 55℃ output port short circuit test, abnormal charging test, forced discharge test, BMS verification, power input test, and photovoltaic cell flammability test.

★ Shell test: steady-state uniform force test, bending force test, mold stress relief test.

★ Miscellaneous test: label performance test.

Some revised test items:

★ Short circuit test

1. Added 55℃ test conditions; deleted the requirement of short circuit for 24h.

2. For mobile power supplies containing lithium batteries, additional condition requirements are added: the initial discharge current of the built-in battery is 1.2 times the maximum continuous discharge current of the built-in battery. There is no need to apply a single fault condition on the BMS of the built-in battery. The discharge will continue until the cell or battery explodes, vents, or the BMS operates, and the internal cell shell temperature reaches a steady-state condition or returns to ambient temperature.

★ Overcharge test

For mobile power supplies containing lithium batteries, the charging voltage is modified from 1.4 times the upper limit voltage of a single battery cell to 1.1 times.
